The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has an opening for an Assistant Instructional Designer in the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL).


The Assistant Instructional Designer works closely with instructional designers in developing and supporting online courses offered through CITL.


The Assistant Instructional Designer is responsible for staying current with campus-supported and other potential educational technologies and for assisting with the technical development of assigned projects and instructional applications.


Major Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Create and update content within the LMS.

  • Work with instructors to prepare their fully-developed online courses to be offered again.

  • Meet with team members to solve problems and plan upcoming work.

  • Support faculty on technical issues while their courses are running.

  • Serve as the team's point-person on assigned technologies by deeply understanding the technology and, where applicable, administering the service.

  • Serve on internal committees to improve the infrastructure of the team (e.g. enhancing templates, expanding documentation, recommending new technologies).

  • Work with hourly staff to train them, delegate tasks, and ensure the quality and timely delivery of their work.

  • Provide instructional design support on course projects (e.g. reviewing module learning objectives, estimating student effort, reviewing quiz feedback).

  • Liaise with quality control and assurance staff to correct errors found in online courses.



  • Bachelor's degree required.

Required experience and qualifications:

  • Demonstrable experience in developing educational web-based materials.

  • Strong problem-solving skills.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to function in a team environment.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Strong time-management skills including the ability to meet deadlines in a timely fashion.

Preferred experience and qualifications:

  • Experience working in Higher Education.

  • Experience developing content within Learning Management Systems such as Blackboard and Moodle.

  • Experience working with faculty in a role other than as a student.

  • Experience administering Collaborate or other web conferencing systems.

  • Experience taking a fully-online course as a student.

  • Proficiency with multimedia-oriented tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Audacity, or Camtasia.

  • Proficiency with HTML and CSS.

  • Knowledge of adult learning theory, pedagogy, and instruction systems design.

  • Knowledge of best practice in standards-compliant responsive web design, accessibility, user-experience design, information architecture, and graphic design.

  • Working knowledge of JavaScript.

This position is a 100% full-time, benefit's eligible Academic Professional position. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications and the start date is as soon as possible after the close date.
