Job Title: Instructional Technologist

Organization: ​Hadley Institute for the Blind and Visually Impaired

This is a full-time exempt position.

 

Overview:

The Instructional Technologist position serves as an instructional design and technical support position to the Learning Design and five practice domains—Adjustment, Independence, Recreation; Business & Employment; Access Technology; Braille for Visual Learners; and Braille for Tactile Learners—at Hadley. This role collaborates with the workshop design teams to provide design guidance for innovative and engaging e-learning initiatives, ensure accessibility of all the components, ensure their educational validity per instructional design best practices, and then ensure they are carried through to implementation. The nature of the role requires this individual to collaborate across all areas of Hadley and the relevant areas within the education function to meet e-learning student needs. All efforts support the vision, mission, values, and principles of the Hadley Institute for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

 

Job Responsibilities:

 

  • Instructional design and e-learning product development (65%)

    • Design interactive, usable, accessible educational formats and products, including telephone delivery of learning pieces and instructional games, according to instructional design best practices

    • Research improved ways to create engaging, accessible online e-learning formats and products

    • Understand complex, technical matters and communicate them in plain English, bridging Technology Services, Learning Design, and other Hadley departments

    • Help learning designers and learning experts understand potential online functionality, e-learning options, and e-learning strategy

    • Participate in content development, document user procedures, document system navigation and functionality, and create job aids and workflows

    • Write content when expertise matches the subject matter of the education product

    • Design and write supporting pieces for educational products, such as handouts and question banks

    • Carry out pre- and post-quality review of e-learning prototypes, storyboards and workshops

    • Support project management for assigned e-learning design and development projects

  • Manage webinars for Hadley (30%)

    • Coordinate between practice leaders and Media Production to schedule subject matter experts and outside presenters for Hadley webinar projects

    • Support overall project management for Hadley webinars

    • Work with Hadley practice leaders to design, develop, coordinate, and deliver webinars at Hadley, including those that meet CE hour requirements

    • Develop content for webinars following instructional design best practices

    • Provide quality review of webinar products

    • Provide technical support for webinars

    • Serve as moderator for webinars, on as-needed basis

  • Follows an effective plan of continuing education to provide for professional growth and enrichment (5%)

    • Maintain relevant certifications/endorsements

    • Review literature relevant to areas of professional expertise

    • Participate in relevant internal/external professional development opportunities (conferences, coursework) that contribute to professional growth related to the position

Education and Experience:

 

  • BA or BS degree or equivalent work experience

  • Minimum 3 years related work experience in areas of e-learning design, development and working with e-learning instructional material

  • Experience with managing webinars

  • Knowledge of WCAG 2.0 and 2.1

  • Knowledge of inclusive/universal design principles

  • Experience implementing accessibility requirements for low vision and screenreader users in e-learning; familiarity with screenreaders a strong plus

  • Dynamic team player: excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well as accountability—meets deadlines and communicates in timely, independent fashion

  • Excellent writing skills, instructional design skills, and presentation/speaking skills

  • Experience as telecommuter

  • Knowledge of web technologies, multimedia applications, social media, and online learning systems

  • Knowledge of the principles of adult education

  • Well versed in Microsoft office tools and prototyping
