IHME has an outstanding opportunity for an Instructional Designer. The incumbent in this role is responsible for the development of learning solutions for IHME staff and various external audiences. This role will be the key driver in connecting employees to IHME’s goals and mission, and will create and implement learning experiences throughout the onboarding period and beyond to set every IHME employee up for success. In addition, the instructional designer will play a central role in helping external audiences learn about IHME methods, tools, and data through the creation of diverse education and training opportunities. The successful applicant will help build and promote IHME’s agile, intellectually driven workforce allowing them to succeed efficiently and effectively in an ambitious, team-based environment.

The individual in this role will be responsible for the design, development, and assessment of learning solutions that support knowledge acquisition and skill development within and outside the Institute. This position will play a key role in advancing the institute’s ability to conduct innovative and ground-breaking research through the creation of learning opportunities focused on bolstering staff technical, quantitative, managerial, communication, and leadership skills. Moreover, this role will foster uptake of IHME research methods and associated tools using novel training solutions to address the learning needs of external audiences, collaborators and institutional stakeholders. Strong expertise in instructional design, curriculum development, eLearning and translating learning needs of staff into meaningful learning solutions to aid their proficiency in using cutting-edge technology, methods, and tools is an important requirement of this position. Experience and proficiency in developing online training modules using the latest technologies and tools is required. The ideal candidate will be comfortable creating eLearning modules, creating and editing multimedia elements for the online courses, partnering with subject matter experts to create trainings, keeping content relevant and updated, and continuing to help develop current training offering.

The incumbent must develop a robust understanding of IHME’s priority research areas, assess the skill and knowledge requirements needed to carry out work in these areas, and build curricula, teaching materials, and online trainings that help staff advance the institute to analyze, understand, and evaluate health challenges across the globe. A crucial feature of this position is the design and development of eLearning solutions that provide on-demand and agile learning opportunities to help staff achieve professional goals and acquire new skills. Direct engagement with various research and operational teams across the Institute to build learning solutions that catalyze their capacity to achieve IHME’s mission to improve the health of the world’s populations is also a key aspect of this role. The individual in this role will provide learning solutions to individuals from different cultural, linguistic, and disciplinary backgrounds and must be prepared to address the learning needs of individuals who possess a wide range of experience and understanding both intellectually and professionally.

Responsibilities:

Designing curriculum and content

 

  • Drive the design of curriculum within the institute to instill and sustain the skills required in order to produce high-quality, relevant, and timely results to aid decision makers in health;

  • Design, develop, and evaluate eLearning solutions that provide convenient, dynamic, and on-demand training to staff across the institute as well as external audiences;

  • Design and develop dynamic, interactive and user friendly eLearning and multimedia training solutions to help internal and external audiences acquire new knowledge and skills;

  • Assess and analyze learning and development needs across the institute and translate them into training opportunities, including classroom trainings, eLearning opportunities, workshops, and job aids;

  • Work directly with subject matter experts to create lesson plans, competency maps, learner assessment rubrics, and other instructional design materials as needed;

  • Creating storyboards/scripts and production-ready content for video or web-based training programs and advising on production.

  • Write goal statements, learning objectives, and performance objectives and map them to instructional strategies and teaching material;

  • Evaluate and critically analyze learning solutions as well as update and re-calibrate teaching materials to ensure they are meaningful and valuable;

  • Apply adult learning principles to the design and development of curriculum;

  • Understand emerging trends in instructional design, including eLearning technologies;

  • Utilize project management skills to meet project milestones, communicate issues and risks in a timely manner, and manage internal stakeholder expectations;

  • Provide instructional support in the form of individual coaching, teaching aids, teaching plans and group learning solutions to internal staff seeking to administer their own training plans.


Developing content and teaching materials

 

  • Build teaching materials as needed, including lecture slides, exercises, learner assessments, participant guides, and job aids;

  • Create eLearning content and materials, including videos, hands-on interactivity, and downloadable job aids; Create engaging and compelling hands-on and applied learning activities for both in-person and online trainings;

  • Develop both formative and summative assessments that measure knowledge acquisition and achievement.


Instructional evaluation

 

  • Design evaluations to assess the quality of instruction, the learner experience, and effective design of curriculum;

  • Collect and analyze data from evaluations and make recommendations about updating and improving curricula and content, including eLearning solutions;

  • Work with subject-matter experts to perform updates to curriculum, content, and materials as necessary.


General
 

 

  • Manage the instructional design process with internal stakeholders including scheduling meetings, managing timelines, tracking progress, and building assessments;

  • Manage relationships with internal stakeholders and service providers (when necessary), work directly with ODT team members to implementation and execute the logistics and specifics of learning solutions, as needed;

  • Provide support for courses taught by IHME faculty at the University of Washington. Duties may include building and updating course syllabi, lesson plans, exercises, and assessments;

  • Design and administer online surveys, quizzes, and learner assessments through various online learning solution platforms;

  • Other duties as assigned.


Requirements:

Minimum
 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Curriculum and Instructional Design, or Organizational Development and four years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience;

  • Experience and interest in working within a diverse cultures, and in building content that resonate with a community that values diversity, equity, and inclusion;

  • Experience designing and developing curriculum and building training materials for instructor-led and online trainings;

  • Proficiency independently using e-learning software platforms and online training authoring programs;

  • Proficiency using eLearning authoring platforms such as Articulate Storyline 2, Camtasia, or Adobe Captivate

  • Experience using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, or Premier Pro to generate graphics, animation, and content for online trainings;

  • Experience using learning managements systems to deliver online virtual trainings

  • Strong interpersonal, teamwork, and customer service skills, as well as the ability to foster positive relationships with diverse members of staff and supervisors;

  • Strong theoretical and experiential knowledge of adult learning principles, learning science theories and organizational development;

  • Familiar with using data collection techniques, needs assessments, learner analysis, and research to analyze and assess learning outcomes and improve individual and organizational performance;

  • Experience with designing self-paced learning opportunities—tutorials, Google-style code labs, exercises, assessments, and other methods of learning interventions including multimedia-based assets

  • Demonstrated project management skills, including the abilities to think independently, track many details and logistics concurrently, be flexible, and juggle priorities for multiple ongoing projects with minimal supervision;

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy. Strong MS Office software skills, including proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and MS Outlook (specifically, managing calendars).
